Is it permissible to remarry after divorce? If we are forgiven, then are we not free to start again?
by John Mayo
It is permissible for a person to remarry if they are divorced according to God's Word. Jesus gave the scriptural reason for divorce in Matthew 19:9. "Whosever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, all shall marry another committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery." However, if God's reason for divorce does not exist, then the right to remarry does not exist. Since such an additional marriages are not God approved, couples living in these relationships are not in harmony with God's word. In order to receive God's forgiveness a person must repent and repentance means that a person can not continue to take part in the sin of which he or she repents. If a marriage relationship is not right according to God's plan, then it must not continue. Just as a homosexual or bank robber can repent and be forgive, a marriage that is wrong in God's eyes can be forgiven, but neither the homosexual or bank robber or the adulterous marriage partners can continue in their sinful ways and be right in God's sight.
