Introduction

1. Bible is most popular and influential book in the world.  People call for the Bible when they      marry and when they die.

2. Most misunderstood book.

3. Bible is not responsible for religious division.

 

Discussion

1.  MANY MISUNDERSTAND THE WHOLE BIBLE.

A.  Misunderstand source.  2 Tim 3:16-17; 2 Pet 1:21; 1 Cor 2:11-13

B.  Misunderstand purpose.  Psa 119:105 furnishes us completely.

C.  Misunderstand nature. Indestructible. 1 Pet. 1:23,25

2.   MANY MISUNDERSTAND THE TESTAMENTS.

A. There is an Old and a New testaments.           

B. Col. 2:14; Heb. 10:9; 9:16-17

3.  MANY MISUNDERSTAND THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE.

A. Old: Law, History, Poetry, Prophecy.

B.  New: Biography, History, Letters, Prophecy.

4.  MANY MISUNDERSTAND THE CHAPTERS OF THE BIBLE.

A. Cardinal Hugo in 1250 divided the Bible into verses.

B.  Break is not in right place at times.  Hebrews 2:1 is actually conclusion of chapter 1.

5.  MANY MISUNDERSTAND THE VERSES OF THE BIBLE.

A. God did not divide the Bible into chapters and verses.  Sir Robert Stephens divided the                   Bible into verses in 1551.

B.  Some expect too much of one verse.  No one verse teaches all the plan of salvation.

C.  We can be saved on no fewer conditions stated in any one verse, but other conditions                    may be stated elsewhere.  John 3:16 there is no mention of baptism.  Other verses                    teach it.  1 Pet. 3:21, Mk. 16:16

6.  SOME MISUNDERSTAND THE PHRASES OF THE BIBLE.

A. “For remission of sins” in Acts 2:38 and Mt 26:28 mean same thing.

B.  For—is it because of or in order to?

C. Connecting word - and.  Two things done for one purpose.

7.  SOME MISUNDERSTAND THE WORDS OF THE BIBLE.

A. Repentance is more than being sorry.  Mt. 21:28-30; 2 Cor 7:10

B.  Baptism is not sprinkling. Rom 6:4

 

Conclusion

1. Misunderstanding can be erased only by study of the Bible.  Eph. 3:3-4; 5:17

2. Understanding is essential if we are to please God.  Acts 8:30; Jn 8:32
