THINGS WE CAN KNOW ABOUT THE BIRTH OF CHRIST

 

Introduction

1. Views abut observing Christmas: no gifts to children, no classes on birth of Christ is Dec., or,       Reason for the Season; put Christ back in Christmas; Religious day.

2. Traced to Pagan: trees, lights.

A. Goddess Juno protector of women - - - June weddings.

B. Thursday = pagan God Thor.

C. Hallowe’en = pagan origin.

D. All days/months named after gods.

E. Not what they meant but what do you mean by it?

3. We cannot know: date, three wise men.

4. NT emphasis on death, not birth. Baptism, Lord’s Supper.

5. What we know is limited to what is revealed.  Dt. 29:29

6. Good time to teach the truth on this subject.

1. WE CAN KNOW WHERE HE WAS BORN.

A. Wise men inquire. Mt 1:1-2; Micah 5:2

B. Book of Mormon says Jerusalem.  Alma 7:10

 

2. WE CAN KNOW HE WAS FIRSTBORN.

A. Lk 2:7

B. She had other children. Mt 13:55

 

3. WE CAN KNOW HOW HE WAS BORN.

A. Lk. 1:30-33; virgin birth Heb 10:5; Gal 4:4-5; new Jer. 31:22.

B. Fulfilled Isa 7:14; Mt 1:18-25.

 

4. WE CAN KNOW HIS NAMES.

A. Mt. 1:21

B. Isa. 9:6

 

5. WE CAN KNOW WHY HE WAS BORN.

A. Lk. 19:10; reveal God Jn 1:18; sin Jn 1:29

B. King, truth. Jn. 18:33-37.

C. Die. . .if it be possible.  Mt. 26:39

 

Conclusion

1. Without His birth, there could be no death, burial, resurrection, ascension.

2.  Baptism and Lord’s Supper will have lost their meaning.

3.  1 Timothy 3:16
